Who was Rebbe Nachman of Breslov?

Rebbe Nachman was a rabbi who was born in 1772 and died in 1810. Even though he was only 38 years old when he died, he managed to do a lot of good things in his short life.

Reb Noson Sternhartz was a student of Rebbe Nachman’s and learned a lot from him. Reb Noson had learned a lot of interesting things from Rebbe Nachman that really helped him with some of the tough times he had to go through. Reb Noson thought that what Rebbe Nachman had told him and taught to other students would be beneficial to other people. So he wrote down almost everything that Rebbe Nachman ever taught. That’s how we know so much of Rebbe Nachman’s life, including his stories and stories about him.

Rebbe Nachman lived and died in Ukraine, where he is buried. He was in Israel once for a few months. When he was there Napolean was fighting a war against the Turkish sultan who ruled the land. Rebbe Nachman barely managed to escape!

Rebbe Nachman also made a lot of mysterious trips around Europe and talked with all kinds of people. He knew people often felt bad and had troubles, so he did all he could to give them good advice and encouragement.

Because Reb Noson wrote down Rebbe Nachman’s teachings a lot of people—even nowadays—studied them and thought they were really good too. Jews who follow Rebbe Nachman’s advice and suggestions are called Breslovers because Rebbe Nachman lived the last years of his life in the village of Breslov. If you want to see what a Breslover looks like, face this way.
