Dvar Torah for Parshat Shelach
Based on Likutey Moharan II, Lesson #12
"Send, if you want, men to spy the land..." (Numbers 13:2).
Once upon a time people thought the universe was geocentric. Now
most think it is heliocentric. It is certainly egocentric.
Rebbe Nachman offers us a litmus test for deciding whether or not to
do something. "In everything you do, look to do see if God is there.
Don't concern yourself at all with your honor; if God will be
honored by your doing so, do it. If not, don't do it." He offers us
this suggestion after warning us not to make life decisions based
solely on our intellect.
The spies had very rational arguments for why the Israelites should
not enter the Holy Land. Still and all, they should have had faith
in God's promise that the Land was "flowing with milk and honey" and
encouraged the people to enter. Yet, in a subtle way, they were too
concerned about their position. Even Yehoshua and Kalev, who did not
give a negative report about the Land, needed extra help in order to
resist the temptation that snared the others. Yehoshua was protected
by the prayer Moshe Rabbeinu offered on his behalf, and Kalev was
protected by his own prayers that he offered at the graves of the
Patriarchs and Matriarchs.
May the merit of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, and of all the
tzaddikim protect each of us from making bad decisions. Amen.
