Dvar Torah for Parshat Behaalotekha
Based on Likutey Halakhot, Eruvei Techumin 5:20
"The Israelites would travel at God's bidding, and at God's bidding they
would camp..." (Numbers 9:18).
Wherever you go, you're somewhere else.
And there's a reason for that, for your moving, just a wee bit that
way or way, way over there. The light from the Great Beyond,
Upstairs, is shining down and landing on every square inch of our
marvelous planet. Not exactly in the same way, as you can see for
yourself. Here, near the Mediterranean, we're loosening our collars
a bit, it's so hot. Inside the Arctic Circle their turning up their
collars, it's so cold. Mere miles from the lush grass lawns of the
suburbs are the comforting (to city folk) squares of concrete.
And you've got your personal brand and degree of faith, in the
Creator, His Torah and His running of the whole business of life.
It's not enough for you -- or the rest of us -- for you to shine it
just at home. So God tells you, some how, to hit the road and shine
the faith you do.
The light that each place receives shines into you as well. When you
get "there" -- and pass through "there" and "there" and "there" --
each place brings you to an additional perception of faith. Then the
light that shines to where you've been shines that might brighter.
