Alyssa Shapiro July 6, 2017 - 11:31 am

Good Morning,

My name is Alyssa Shapiro and I am the 2017 Summer Outreach Intern for Sharsheret. Sharsheret is a national not-for-profit organization that supports Jewish women and families facing breast and ovarian cancer at every stage. Whatever their diagnosis or treatment, stage of life, or connection to Judaism, Sharsheret helps women connect to the community in ways that feel comfortable and relevant to them.

1 in 40 Jews of Ashkenazi descent carries the BRCA (breast cancer) gene mutation, making Jewish families at 10X greater risk than the general population. Accordingly, 1 in 8 women in this population will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.

I am reaching out to invite you to join us in the Sharsheret Pink Shabbat® Program, a national education, awareness, and empowerment initiative taking place in congregations throughout the Massachusetts area and across the country. While this initiative continues throughout the year, we encourage synagogues to mark National Ovarian/Breast Cancer Awareness Months – September/October – by hosting a Sharsheret Teal and/or Pink Shabbat® program to educate congregants about:

• Raising awareness about breast and ovarian cancer and BRCA genetics
• How to better support those facing a diagnosis
• Learning their family genetic history and being proactive about their health
• Sharsheret’s free services and resources

Please join us! Contact me at [email protected] or 866.474.2774 to get started.

Best,
Alyssa
