About BRI

What is the Breslov Research Institute?

Shortly before his passing in 1810, Rebbe Nachman told his followers that his influence would long endure, saying, “My fire will burn until the Mashiach (Messiah) comes.” His words could not have been more prophetic. Generations of readers have been enthralled and inspired by his writings, which have been explored and interpreted by scholars around the world. In recent years especially, we have witnessed masses of searching Jews of all backgrounds – non-religious, religious, Ashkenazic, Sephardic and Hasidic – uniting in spiritual pursuit, seeking to understand and acquire the teachings of the great Tzaddik.

However, a common barrier prevents many people from properly accessing these great works – language. Since its inception in 1979, the Breslov Research Institute has made classic and contemporary Breslov writings widely available in the major languages spoken by modern-day Jewish communities: English, Hebrew, Spanish and Russian. More than 100 titles are currently in print, with more in production all the time. Now, all who are spiritually thirsty can come and drink from these pure waters.

What we have accomplished … What we still must do
Over the years, Breslov Research Institute has been privileged to accomplish quite a lot. Early classics such as Rabbi Nachman’s Stories and Crossing the Narrow Bridge opened the eyes of many to the Torah for the first time, offering the tools for embracing a more spiritually fulfilling life. Over the years, our in-depth presentations of the Rebbe’s teachings on prayer, tefilin, Jewish holidays, the Land of Israel, Mashiach, and more have brought English-speakers face to face with the sources in a vibrant way, while children’s stories based on Rebbe Nachman’s parables engage the younger generation.
Today, we are well on our way toward completing the first authoritative English translation of Likutey Moharan,Rebbe Nachman’s magnum opus containing all his major lessons. This 15-volume set includes full explanatory notes, as well as source references and supplementary information on each lesson. We have also translated several of Reb Noson’s major works, and have introduced a whole new genre of contemporary Breslov literature with modern-day biographies and self-help books for applying the Rebbe’s wisdom to daily life. Our books have become so well-known that it is common for universities and secular institutions to make requests for them.
On a musical note, many people have been inspired by our renditions of the classic music and niggunim of the Breslover chassidim. Still others, from a newer generation, prefer to pursue their spirituality online. We have created a fully functional website for them, where they can ask questions and read and comment about articles written on our blog. Hundreds of hours of recorded audio are also available for download.

Rebbe Nachman is so great, we feel we haven’t yet scratched the surface of properly disseminating his teachings.

Why does Breslov Research Institute need your generous support?
Our deep, enduring love for the mitzvah of disseminating Rebbe Nachman’s teachings does not preclude the need for money. Breslov Research Institute employs a team of scholars who are thoroughly engaged in researching the texts and oral traditions of Breslov Chassidut, as well as producing scholarly and authentic works of the highest caliber. The consumer market is simply not large enough to offset the enormous costs of producing such great works. Much like all other private institutions and charitable foundations, we rely on public support.

A closing thought
What kind of charity is eternal? Charity given to produce Torah literature for the benefit of others (Talmud, Ketubot 50a). This applies especially to the writings of Rebbe Nachman, which teach people how to discover their inner potential and lead lives of joy and spiritual connection. These books save lives! Why is such charity eternal? Once the book is printed, it is available for all. Each time someone reads or studies from it, the donor who supported it is rewarded. The reward for this mitzvah even follows him into the next world, where the principal – which is even greater – awaits him. In today’s market, who can guarantee that kind of an investment with guaranteed high yields?

Thank you for your kindness.
